Hi folks, bought an alvey comb and fished with it once, everything was OK but found it was a bit frustrated as the line kept getting out of the open runner when rewinding with a fisk hooked, just wondering if any experienced alvey users could give some clues re where to put your left hand and index finger (closer to the open runner or the reel), how to level wind with the index finger, etc. It is much appreciated if some pics are presented. Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. Hi, pal. Welcome to the forum. I'm a regular Alvey user, despite not specialist, so, is here my oppinion. Your open runner can be so much "open". Can be the reason for the escaping line. In this case, I would do a small tightening, with the correct delicacy, sure, for do not ruin the piece. Other reason can be you are fishing with line so much looseness. Use a more weight sinker. Normally, I use my finger more close to reel than to open runner for the retrieve. Worth take a look this video series: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEaVQCjhYIOfVZg6D52pSPxeAHkEApLLQ

This card comes with the Open Runner. It is a good illustration of the hand position. Welcome to the forum.

Great post Gene.
I've found the bigger the Alvey, the more you want an open runner!

Thanks so much for the advice, pic, and the link to alvey videos. I tried putting my hand a bit closer to reel and found it was a lot better. I also replaced the 2oz sinker with a 3oz one, which did help keeping the line in open runner. It also helped getting line wond more level on the spool. Hopefully this info would be of value to other new alvey users.

Hi, Try closing the open runner so the gap is only about 2-3 mm, every alvey style rod that i own I've had to do this because of the same problem and closing the gap fixed it for me I'm only a little guy and i like to have the fingers guiding the line about half way between the reel and the open runner but i depends on what comfortable when u have the rod in what gimble bucket that u like to use. The line does not go in the open runner when u are casting. Regardas gumboot

Hi Gumboot, interested in knowing how you made the open runner slightly closer as I worry it would damage the rod. On the other hand, just wondering if anyone else did the same with their alvey rods?

Hi Salmonanger, just use expandable plies with a wooden rule [ or ice-cream stick] to protect the rod surface, just enough pressure to move the open runner closer to the rod it doesn't take that much Regards Gumboot
