Hi Guys!
I'm wanting to start doing some beach fishing. Something about getting back to basics is drawing me in.
I normally fish plastics/lures only. But I know you can't go past the old Alveys for the surf.. However little did I know there were so many options!.. So far Im looking to put together two rigs. One heavy and one a little lighter for whiting/dart.
Heavy rig - Alvey Rod 6500 (Custom beach king) matched to a 650BT, running 8kg/17lb mono. (Am I going to heavy here?) Light rig (Not 100% on this)* - Alvey Rod 555 matched to either a 55B or a 600B, running 4kg/8lb. (Would a 600b be to heavy for this rod)
*For the lighter rig would I be better of going with the 625L and just matching it to a 600?
I'm in SEQLD, am I on the right track here?
Cheers Ethan

Mate sounds like you have it sewn up.
For estuary and light surf I use the Rod555 with the 55BCT. the rod is very versatile and the reel is typical Alvey; bullet proof .
cheers

Hi Ethan,
Your rigs sounds good. I use 10kg/20lb line for 650A5 reels and 7kg/15lb for 600BT reels and it's perfect. I'd recommend Platypus Lo Stretch line if you haven't spoiled the reels yet.
Good luck mate. Please post us pics when you rig it all up.

Indeed, I believe its in the standards for Alvey beach use, with no problems, pal. Now, is go fish and take all the advantages the Alvey tackle can give to you.

Where in SEQ Ethan are you? I'm on the Sunshine Coast. The 625B has got to be one of the best (in my opinion) light-medium surf reels that Alvey make. The larger diameter makes for a faster winding reel that makes pulling in a lot of line quicker & easier, yet the shallow spool means it's light, and doesn't take as much line so it's cheaper to fill. The Platypus LoStretch is the ultimate line for it. Combine that with the ROD555, and you've got such an awesome outfit that will catch everything from Whiting to Bream to Flathead to Tailor to Dart to...... I know this as that's what I have

Hi Guys!
Thanks for all the replies. I hadn't forgot about you all.
I went into the local tackle shop today after a disappointing visit to BCF. My small independent store had 10x the range of bcf, I was actually blown away.. Anyway I came out with a 6500 rod/625L rod/600B reel. However I still really like the idea of a smaller lighter rig as the 625 with the 600 reel still has quite a bit of weight about it. So I also picked up a cheap 500B reel on gumtree. - God this is never going to end..
So I'm now thinking.
6500 rod/650b reel/8kg line 625L rod/600b reel/6kg line 555 rod/500b reel/4kg line
Something's telling me to go 10/8/6. But I just think that might be to heavy.
Dan - unfortunately I'm in Brisbane. But I spend a lot of time on both the coasts.

If you're ever heading up this way mate, give us a hoy. Might be able to get out for a fish.
The 500B with the ROD555 will be a pretty nice setup for the lighter outfit

Being so far removed from you all, I am impressed that we have so much in common when it applies to beach fishing. I am in agreement with your choices MrKnowNothing.

And here I was thinking that Alvey reels were just a QLD thing, hell even just a SEQLD thing..
Guys, do I need to fill the reels to there full capacity. I'm using the 500m rolls of Lo-stretch but that still leaves 200m-300m/400mish of room.

Hi MrKnowNothing, if you really want to fill the spools the Platypus Low stretch is available in 1200 Meter Rolls ? Some like to fill to the brim but the other thought is if you have space it can be better for casting Regards Gumboot.

I just use the 500m spools and I've never had an issue. I have over filled smaller reels before, and had some issues with extra loops coming off when casting.

Sounds like you've pretty much sorted it mate Thats the same line weights I'm using of the old beaches......and you done right by getting lo stretch line Always try and fish as light as you can.....especially when trying to get those little whiting......i find i really benefit from a very light whip rod for whiting.....allows you to feel all the small bites......and i use a 625b for my whiting setup. Great to have you on board and hope to start reading of your beach fishes. Enjoy!!
