The jetty is at Galveston, Texas. Last, your thinking of Debarte. Haven't heard from him for awhile.

I have been reading on a surf fishing site that a breakaway cannon can be used with a Alvey rod/reel but for life of me i dont understand how or where on the rod you could tape it on where it would work has any one ever tried a cannon or saw one in use on a Alvey ? I have used a line cannon many times with a standard spinning rod instead of just holding the line with my finger. It can give you better distance. I am new to Alvey surf reels and just learning the system. Because the cannon really needs to be in direct line with the spool, this might be difficult to attach the cannon that far back. I will surely try it and report when I do if I was successful.

I would love to argue with Last about low mounts and rod balance. Then I look at this Alvey user's photo from Texas and, I crawl back into my hole. Especially with the graphite reels, the lighter weight may be opening new opportunities. You think so? what nice about a long butt rod on the jettys is you can stick it down in a crack in the rocks and use it for a spike and long nuff the reel clears the rocks

I,m from the uk where these are made and used I find they work better with alvey reels than any other, they are taped on slightly behind the reel on top of the rod so as the line is angled back from the reel. They are especially usefull when using braid and heavy leads, I have also noticed the difference in end rigs what you would use is used now and again and is called a runing leger over here. But with the heavy currents and big casting distances required they are rarely used on my local beach if you cant cast at least 150 yards you might as well go home. We use tournament rods and pendulum casts ZZiplex and century rods are the norm for this.

last...I have many models but my fave is the pendletec, which is as the name suggests primarily for pendulum casting,. I can get 250 yards on a good day but my lad has cast over 300 many times but he is seven foot two and a pro strongman lol. I hasten add this is over grass. Anglers corner have the breakaway thumbutton it is a slightly different version but better I think and considerably cheaper. Just over two of your dollars really does work a treat with an alvey you will wonder why you never tried one before.

I reckon some of you blokes need to toughen up. This is how you hand will look when you have mastered the line grab.

I am glad that I viewed that before dinner. Years ago I lost a bit of my finger tip with a spinning reel. Thought the Alvey thumb cast system was superior.

He he, it is a thumb "cast". Not a "thumb cast" Your thumb is supposed to still be attached after the cast...... I have to say with cold wet hands I have had the occasional thumb grabbed by the line. Not pleasant.
