Just started fishing with a Alvey 650 surf and really enjoy the process; however need some tips on casting. It seems my weight is going in a very high arc on its way to the water. Is that because I am releasing the line too soon? Also, where do you get the most power for the cast in the left hand pulling down on the butt of the rod or the right hand pushing the rod over? Would also like to get some advice on how far up the rod your hand should be for long casting.
Caught my first fish on it today, a 16 inch Bluefish that really showed the great versatility of the retrieve.

Time and practice will perfect the release time. Sounds like an early release. I would also be interested in hearing about other forum members techniques. If I am going for maximum distance, which is not most times fishing, I slide my right hand up high on the rod but, still a position where you can push hard as if you were throwing a shot put. The left hand pulls down but, more to maintain a smooth swing than actually adding to the casting power. Some good tips at this web site: ALVEY TIPS

if your rod is loaded you should be able to feel in your hands when to release, start smooth stop rod ( still ) about 10:00 once in a while I get it all to come together right when it do the line snaps off of the end of my thumb and goes really good. but i try to release by feeling pull of the rod releasing bout 10:00 if you dont feel the line rub your thumb ya prolly a little quick on release or letting rod slow down before releasing line but dont let me screw you up every one should do what works best for them,

The old adage of practice makes perfect comes to mind. Find a vacant field, setup a target and practice casting to it while gradually increasing the casting distance. I generate power in my cast by pushing upward, however that's not say that other people may generate most of their power with the pull down. Over time everyone develops their own style which best suits their physique and strength. The main thing is to get out there and practice
