I'm thinking of buying a Alvey 475b side cast reel (I need a left hand retrieve). I would like to match this with a Albja (Bruce Alvey special) fishing rod. I intend to use this for steelhead fishing in the state of Michigan. Is this a good match? I'm buying this blind without seeing any of this first hand.
Thanks,
Craig

The 500BCXL should certainly be capable. When changing it from right to left hand retrieve, I would recommend using a nickle or quarter on the slotted switch on the back. Most screw drivers are not thick enough. Taking the spool off will assure that the process goes positively. No worries, the handle and drag system remain intact on the spool. Regarding the Bruce Alvey Special, it is a light rod for 12 feet. As long as the casting weight ratings match with the terminal tackle you use, you should be good to go. Are you going to do some Great Lakes surf casting?
By the way, there is now a USA distributor of Australian Platypus line on Ebay. The 'Low Stretch' line will work great with that reel. Many here recommend it and, I love it.

I reckon you will be! It's a lovely rod and a classic!
As for the reel the 500 will do nicely, I prefer a 600b for a 12 foot rod but it won't make a huge difference.
Enjoy!
