Hello everyone. This is my first post, I hope I am putting it in the right place. I have never even heard of Alvey until I accidentally came across the website last night. This is going to sound weird, but I think an Alvey may be just what I need even though I live in Kansas. I fish for catfish in the rivers around here and the very fine sand gets into everything. I have a Penn Squidder I have to take apart and clean fairly often because it gets "crunchy" from sand. I have read Alveys are nearly immune to sand, perfect!!! Will an Alvey overcast like my Squidder if I don't mind it or is it like an eggbeater and not make a mess of my line? I have read that line twist is a problem, what do you guys do to eliminate this problem? I think a 500c5 with a AL550 rod would work well for river and lake catfish what do you guys think? If possible I would like to use the same rod to fish for bass and walleye, do you guys think it would cast light live bait? That is all I have for now, I am sure I will have more dumb questions later. Thank you in advance.

Hi, pal. Welcome to the Forum. You right, Alveys are terrific to caught catfishes. In my last trip I caught a good one. And are almost nothing affected by sand. Are easy to cast, and you can reach long distance. 500C5 is a good choice, I have one and have good rememberings using it, an old companion. And with a AL550 rod will make a terrific couple. Is possible use this rod for bass and walleye too, if you want use a spinning reel. To minimize the line twist, just use the correct rig, ever a small swivel at end of main line like is showed in the Alvey site. And, at end of trip, just pull the last 50/80 line meters by the ground, and rewind making a small two finger pression. This will mantain the line ok to store the reel.

Hi Erik welcome to the forum, I am a cat man to. live in Oklahoma if you fishing rivers suspect its Arkansas or Walnut maybe I live on lake Eufaula . yep a alvey cast live bait really good and cut bait way out there to . there are my go to bank fishing / bait casting rod/reels . I like for cats 600, 500, 55s all are good . the bigger the reel the faster the retrieve . just fill but not over fill with line . lighter test line you can get away with the better . keep in touch.

Hi Last, I fish the Kansas, Delaware, and Wakarusa rivers plus the larger creeks around here. Does an Alvey birdsnest like a baitcaster or are they more like a spinning reel and don't make a mess of your line.

i see, your in the north east part of Kansas shucks I was hoping you closer like south east Kansas. . no they dont backlash like a level wind but you will learn to keep twist out of line or they will throw you a knot like a egg beater do sometimes . what i like best about a alvey you can toss live bait without throwing it off the hook and a 75 yd cast with bait and 3 oz sinker aint a big deal at all with 15 or 17 lb test line
