Today after work I took my new 500c5 and 550 rod to an open field to practice casting. Since I have never used an Alvey before I thought some practice was in order. I am by no means a distance casting expert, but the Alvey made me feel like one. Without even trying I easily cast farther than I ever have before. At first, I found the side cast system funky, but was used to it after a half dozen casts. I don't understand the need for an easy cast reel. The original system seems easy to me. The rod worked well my only critcism is that the open runner is a little too open. I think I am going to have to pinch it closed a bit more because as I reeled in, my line would often come out of the open runner. I am impressed so far. I will report back when I have caught something on this combo.

Good times. Have no problem to close a little the open runner. In fact, I believe everybody do it.

Great news to hear. Many find the open runner a bit too open. Just be careful with the pliers. Fortunately, stainless steel bends easily.

it dont matter me much I cut me finger eather way pullin a big ole cat I am not used to not having a level wind, the open runner does help a lot with putting line back on after a cast.

I wish Arthur from Nebraska was computer able. He is fishing 3 Alvey 550 rods and reels on a river near Bloomfield.

I can't wait until you post your first catch... go get some The weather around here has been garbage. It has rained and been unseasonably cool every time I have tried to go fishing. I suppose I could go fishing in the rain, but I fish to enjoy being outdoors not to be cold and wet. This weekend looks good though.

I really don't enjoy to fish under rain.
