Hello, thought I’d do the courteous thing and introduce myself!
During the last few years, I’ve been getting back into the joys of angling after some years absence due to family and work priorities. Fished passionately all through my youth, so it’s like rediscovering a lost love!
Much seems to have changed, but much has also remained the same (in terms of tackle, products, techniques etc). Much of my early sea fishing growing up in Ireland was done on very cheap tackle, some of which was even home made (centre pin reel my father For example).
I’m now actively boat and kayak fishing, estuary fishing, and just starting to try saltwater fly fishing. This is all from my current home in Scotland.
I just recently heard that Alvey was planning to close, but has at least temporarily delayed this due to recent demand & new orders. They were always reels I was aware of, but never owned any.
I’ve now resolved this during the last week! Following some research here in the UK, I’ve been lucky enough to source a 45BCK reel + 605 rod, and a 555ET rod (all new & at reasonable prices). It’s my birthday, so these have been a present from my family.
I’m very excited to be able to start trying these at the beginning of next season once I get back on the water. I’m already learning a lot from browsing on this forum, so thank-you to everyone who’s contributed so far 👍.
”Tight lines” 😃

Awesome, and some great Alvey choices to start out with. You can't just own one. I can see the 555ET being a good shore fishing rod. We look forward to some great reports/ Thanks for joining our family.

Indeed, and thanks for the welcome! I only intended to buy the kayak outfit, but the chap I bought from had one rod left on stock (the 555ET), so I reckon I’d have regretted not buying it in the future as they’re difficult to find in the UK. Assuming I “get on” with the kayak outfit, i’ll need to think of another reel for the telescopic rod for some estuary and holiday fishing. wonder if there’s anyone else from the UK on here?

Welcome to the Forum, pal. Hope you'll make good trips in Scotland. Rod 555ET is good choice. Compact to carry, and suitable for a lot of species. Make good set with 500 or 55 reels series.
