It is a sad day when Bruce Alvey announces they are closing the factory after so long in business.
I can't believe Australians can let such an icon slip into the pages of history, what ever happened to buying Aussie made quality rather than the inferior equipment flooding the markets.

Sad to see. www.couriermail.com.au/business/alvey-reels-australia-closing-down/news-story/b772932fdf676c37f6fe910745a676dcAlvey Reels Australia closing down Glen Norris, The Courier-Mail July 20, 2017 6:38am Subscriber only QUEENSLAND manufacturing icon Alvey Reels, which once boasted its fishing equipment was so strong it never needed replacing, is shutting its doors after almost a century in business. Alvey, based at Carole Park in Ipswich and founded by Charles Alvey in 1920, announced on Wednesday that sales of its reels were now so low that they could not generate the income required to keep the business growing. “We have people using the same reel that their grandfather used. We really want them to buy a new one.” From that post. Yep, it is a sad day for the lovers of that product. There might be some truth in that last sentence I quoted. You know I still have the original Bakelite 5inch or so Alvey reel I bought when I was twenty. The only obvious sign of wear is that I keep making my own cork washer, which sits outside of the reel and act as the drag brake. It is in perfect working order and I still use it. I won a ( AOV, Any Other Variety) section in a surf contest with it many Years ago. It is not that we are stingy but rather get too attached to our old reels. I have owned some fine Pflueger reels, ABU Ambassador 10.000 models etc. Chucked many egg beaters away. I always come back to the Alvey as my fun reel.

Confirmed. Australia is closed for business. Never thought I'd see the day. Very sad. Only bought a new Alvey 6 months ago.

Epic tragedy indeed. The shift away from bait fishing to soft plastics in Australia at least is also responsible. For myself, I would never want anything else for beach, boat or Kayak.

I fish since my 6. Never saw an Alvey, until 2008. I bought my first from Cabelas. Bought my second, from a great guy who lives in Florida.

Bruce Alvey emailed me. He said the heavy promotion of artificial lures and TV shows turned a lot of potential new buyers away.

Have a need of an old times revival. If one or two media opinion creators start a kind of fishing melancholic rescue, a lot of fishermen will start to seek for a relationed old tackle. And Alvey is for long a traditional one.

There is a bunch of stock left, will try to keep things going for awhile. Alvey may be more open to direct contacts and sales now. Also, their manufacturing capabilities, from molding equipment to large scale machining equipment should attract some interest. During WWII, they suspended fishing reel manufacturing to produce stainless steel medical instruments and apparatus for the war effort.

Maybe some hope still.
"Australia... if there was ever a time to stand up and be proud, now is the time! We cannot believe the volume of orders flooding in from retailers around the country as a result of your incredible loyalty towards our Aussie made Alvey Reels. Thank you!
For your benefit, we wish to advise that order levels are currently unprecedented and thank you all for your amazing support. This influx of sales has however cleaned out the physical 'stock on hand' and we are running the factory flat out to fill these orders! At this stage many orders may take a few weeks to reach your retailer so please go easy on them, it's beyond the retailers control.
We also want to advise that in its 'current form' Alvey Reels Australia cannot continue indefinitely but we are looking at all options moving forward. Thank you again for your wonderful support and we will do our utmost to supply your order requests.
Thank you, Bruce Alvey"

Alvey will get a breath with it, but, how Bruce said, the costs are killing.

Bruce Alvey was interviewed by the local ABC radio station (see the Avey Facebook page to listen). He put a lot of blame on the rising cost to do business. One glaring example was the doubling of utility costs, now $5000 per month of which, $600 is electricity and the rest government taxes and fees. He also mentioned being in talks with unnamed overseas reel manufacturers. I don't know how long this link will be good but, here in the 14 minute interview. www.abc.net.au/radio/brisbane/programs/mornings/farewell-alvey-reels/8759660

Come on America, buy more Alveys, the ONLY reel for the beach. We can't let this iconic brand go down the gurgler. We're doing our bit down here. Despite having 6 Alveys that I use regularly and another 12 in my vintage display collection, I went out and bought the big 700C5 that I had always wanted. And I had a heck of a job finding one. All the local tackle shops were sold out and I managed to find one on-line from New South Wales. Alvey now has a back log of orders to keep them going for a few more months but they need momentum and.......a container load crossing the Pacific! And don't tell me they are hard to cast. It's a piece of cake to a get the hang of it! Just check out the many videos. Good fishing, Dan

For those of you that do not follow Facebook, here is Bruce Alvey's recent announcement. "I would like to thank all the Alvey supporters for their massive response by placing orders through our Retailer network Australia wide. We are working flat out at the factory and our loyal staff are doing everything in their power to process these orders and manufacture the goods to fulfill them. We have even had to employ some extra staff to speed up the production time frames. We ask that you please be patient if you are waiting on orders placed with your favourite retailer. There could be delays of up to 4 weeks to get sufficient stock through to fill orders that are currently in our system. Most stores in Brisbane and Sydney have sold there existing stock and are now waiting for fresh stock to be supplied. Please be assured we are doing everything we can to get the orders filled as fast as possible. Your support is truly appreciated . Parts will be available however we are prioritising reels as a matter of urgency. You can order parts through your retailer but please try to get correct part numbers from the "Spare Parts" pages on our web site www.alvey.com.auKindest Regards Bruce Alvey.' Alvey Reels Australia

The Model 6000C8 and the Bruce Alvey Special rod are now out of stock forever. I still have 4 BJA Specials in stock but, because of length shipping restrictions, can only sell in the USA. It is going to be heart breaking slowly deleting selections from the web site.
