Looks like Avey is getting some last minute support. Big News: Great Alvey Challenge Announced! In collaboration with Alvey Reels Australia we are chuffed to announce the Great Alvey Challenge fishing competition! National Gone Fishing Day is on 15th October this year and ANSA QLD are encouraging Queenslanders to rig up their favourite Alvey Reel (or buy one from your local tackle shop) and go fishing! To celebrate an Aussie and Queensland fishing icon, we will be running a one day fishing competition in Queensland waters open to all anglers. Registration and fish capture entry will be managed completely online, so you can get involved no matter where you live in QLD. Only Alvey, non-drag sidecast reels can be used for this competition and all of the prizes up for grabs will be Alvey reels and gear! This is a great opportunity to get out an enjoy a day on the water. There will be a variety of fishing categories for individual species as well as a special BreadnButter Grand Slam! The BreadnButter Grand Slam will be judged on the longest combination of bream, whiting and flathead. There will be sub-junior, junior and senior male & female categories to encourage family fun. Entry fee is only $20+ registration charge for the general public (which includes $10 day membership) and $10 + registration charge for ANSA QLD members. With $10 from each entrant going to purchase of Alvey gear for our competition prizes, fishing this event is also a way to lend a hand in support of a great Aussie Icon. Register for this great event now at: www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?E=26970Keep up-to-date at: www.ansaqld.com.au/great-alvey-challenge/

Good on yer mate! I echo your sentiments about home grown products. I'm glad that you made the last exception though. P.S. Just ordered a 6500BC-V to add to my collection. Just the shot for a big greenback tailor of mulloway in the surf.

I'm glad that you made an exception for Aussie Alveys just like I made an exception for my Penn Surfmaster bought in King of Prussia in 1979. I use it as a boat reel however as I'd be clumsy enough to drop it in the sand if I took it on the beach! And I still have my dad's Penn Senator 3/0 that he traded from a GI in the SW Pacific in WWII. Dan

I have 3 or 4 of them but don't even like them out of a boat 😁 I use abu 7000-C drifting from my boat most of the time and Alvey's fishing from bank.

Hey guys, I am a passionate Alvey fan like you all and I don't want to see them close down forever. Personally I would like them to try the following: - Sell directly online since majority of tackle shops don't stock and promote products in store, special customer orders in reel colours and printing, etc
- Bruce and Glenn Alvey seem to want to retire rather than keep going, sell company to other fishing business in Australia, even seek private investors
- Lower operating costs by downsizing factory, reduce staff levels, smaller range of products, no company representatives, etc
- Cater to new trends in the market with new products that appeal to modern fishing trends, such as plastic lure fishing, reels that suit braided lines, etc
- More Alvey product demonstrations using YouTube, Facebook, and television shows that emphasise product quality, customer service, Australian made, excellent value, sand and salt resistance, etc.
- Seeking government grands to remain competitive in manufacturing in Australia and exporting internationally
What suggestions would you do for Alvey to stay open?

I believe some items, if not all of them, probably passed in Bruce ideas.

I'm sure they have but it seems not much has happened.
I hope something can be done to secure Alvey's future.

Bruce already has been playing a lesser roll now that he is in his 70's. However, the biggest reason appears to be the cost of doing business in Queensland.

It appears there isn't anyone in the Alvey family that is keen to takeover the business like Bruce and Glenn have do so for many years.

Latest update, the Model 725C52 and 925C52 Boat Reels, Model 651C5 Side Cast Reel and, most Deck Winches will no longer be available. Most metal parts are on hand but, limited demand does not justify a new spool production run on their compression molding machinery. Emphasis is now only on popular models. Alvey rod models will also not be restocked.

A heart warming update from Alvey. "Just to keep everyone up to date the factory is very ,very busy and new staff are settling in well and reels and Pumps are starting to flow. The reason for the long delay is components for the reels had been run down with the slow sales and now we are having to build reels from scratch starting with raw materials right through to sub component assemblies all done in our factory. However there are so many reels on back order there will still be delays and orders are still coming in at a steady pace. Thank you for your patience and your wonderful support. Kindest Regards Bruce & Glenn Alvey and all the staff at Alvey Reels Australia."

Alvey will no longer be ordering more of their rod lines. Models 500, 550, 650GTS and Bruce Alvey Special are out of stock. Get them while you can. I'm trying to balance 10 pack rod purchases with my reel orders. Wish I had access to the great Alvey rods still produced in Australia. Glenn Alvey said, with the new interest in their products, they are not sure what to do next.

Now into October and Alvey is still trying to catch up on back orders, including mine. I hope this keeps up. I sense a realization that you should not try to produce a model to serve everyone's desire. Just my opinion. Time, cost and effort for little return on investment. Stick to what is popular. Unfortunately, finding matching rods will become a problem for USA customers. Go Alvey!

Gents
New to this Forum (Yesterday). Wish I had found it earlier. Have an old Model that I love but have not been Surf fishing for a couple of years.. Will get the Model and add it to this Thread.
I hope that Alvey makes it through this rough time. I will be buying a new one shortly, even if I have to wait.
I have over 30 old Penn Conventional Reels (I think some might call them 'Multipliers'). Love the old 'Made in USA' Models. Some of the issues that Penn had was so many crossover Models. Penn went offshore and the quality suffered. If you know them, you are already aware.
Pairing down won't solve all Alvey's issues but it certainly won't hurt. I wouldn't court Off-Shore Manufacturing as I believe there are many like me that want the Made in Australia as I only consider the Made in the USA label..
The Alvey's are bulletproof like the Penn's. Trim the Model selection, address the Staff, review, rebuild.
Just my opinion and thanks Steve Virginia Beach, VA

G'day, I just read the sad news about Alvey closing down, I hope they can find a way to stay open. It looks like they have reduced the models they are now selling.

Good afternoon to everyone,
I have rejoined the Alvey mob after too many years away.
As a teenager I owned a 650 C5 and one of the 650 geared Alveys paired with the Butterworth MT7144 fibreglass rods - a sturdy but heavy setup, good for some types of fishing but too heavy for casual wandering along the beaches. The geared Alvey from the 1980's was a particularly sturdy item but way too heavy.
I have been using spin and overhead reels equipped with braid over the last few years however with the constant maintenance of modern reels, and the complications of braid to leader knots, I've lost interest in going fishing because the fishing time has a corresponding amount of preparation and maintenance time.
With the sad prospect of Alvey closing down, I have recently purchased six new Alvey reels, and eight new Alvey rods to get the family and friends involved - I can hardly wait to introduce the grandkids to some Alvey style casting and fishing, and there's no worries about laying the gear down in the sand!
The new Alvey reels are much lighter, and paired with some new light hollow glass rods and mono line, I am looking forward to some low maintenance beach and estuary fishing with my family throughout southern WA.
I hope I've purchased enough to get me through to the end of my fishing days - no doubt the reels will go the distance but there might be some new rods required along the way.
Tight lines.

Welcome Reelin and allwork. Recent news is that Alvey is working with a business consultant to see if there is a workable plan to keep them in business and, profitable.

Thanks GeneB, I havent been on the forum for awhile but I've re-registered with my old user name. I contacted Alvey and asked if they still have the 6000BCV, unfortunately they no longer make it. I think they may only be making a limited number of models now.
